Bike Packing the Kokopelli Trail
The Kokopelli Trail is a 142-mile multi-use trail in the Western U.S. states of Colorado and Utah. The trail was named in honor of its mythic muse, Kokopelli.
This trail is a fairly easy graded trail that runs along 4x4 roads and jeep trail from Fruita CO to Moab UT. It starts off with highly regarded singletrack just outside Fruita. Then skirts alongside the Colorado river and hits a bottle neck segment with loads of overgrown bush. Shortly after it pushes up ot a 4x4 road which continues through a few rafting sections, including Westwater, Cisco. This section is a great continued overlook across the river and a few canyons. Once you cross over the river you will have a long 15 mile consistant climb up twords the La Sal range. This is a multi use road with loads of motos and jeeps burning past you. Be careful and it will be a full day of climbing.
There are some amazing places to camp all along the way and will need to pack enough water for at least two days! Make sure you dont make the mistake of packing light on the water and needing to pedel a bit harder to make my next water source.
This is a wild section with a constant change in landscape over this section with some beautiful views. make the most of it and get a fire going for sunset.
This ride ended up taking 4 days including riding from Moab - Fruita on the side roads then riding the trail properly from Fruita to Moab but having to skip the final climb up to The Rim because of a mechanical issue and double flat tire and cracked rim. Was happy to get a classic bike packing route under my belt and see areas of UT not many take the time to see.
Here are a few photos from the trip.
